Why every lift has a sticking point
A sticking point is the region where a lift suddenly slows, even though the weight has not changed. As your joints move, the weight’s moment arm and your muscles’ leverage change. Muscle force also varies with fiber length and contraction speed, creating positions where the required joint torque comes closest to—or exceeds—the torque you can produce.
That does not automatically mean one muscle is weak. Momentum from the start of a rep can carry you through difficult joint angles, while fatigue or a slower setup can expose them. Technique also shifts the sticking point: bar path, stance, grip and torso angle all change the demands placed on each joint.
Film heavy but controlled reps to identify where speed consistently drops. Then build strength around that region with paused reps, pin variations or closely matched exercises while keeping your main-lift technique consistent. Practical takeaway: train the position where the bar slows instead of guessing which muscle is responsible.
