Training one limb can strengthen the other

Unilateral training creates neural adaptations that can preserve strength in an inactive limb.

Training your right arm can improve strength in your untrained left arm. This “cross-education” effect is real, but it does not mean muscle growth transfers across the body. The untrained limb gains strength mainly because the nervous system becomes better at recruiting and coordinating its muscles.

The effect is especially useful when injury or surgery forces one limb to remain inactive. Research suggests that training the healthy side can reduce strength loss in the immobilized side, although it cannot fully replace direct loading or prevent all muscle loss. The transfer may be strongest when exercises are heavy, controlled and similar to the movement the inactive limb will eventually perform.

If one limb cannot be trained, keep working the healthy side instead of stopping completely, provided the exercise does not aggravate the injury. Treat cross-education as a bridge—not a substitute for rehabilitation—and return to direct training only when cleared.
