Plant protein can build muscle just as effectively

Plant protein works for muscle growth, but source, dose and variety matter.

ForceIndex ·

Muscle does not require animal protein; it requires enough essential amino acids, especially leucine, to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. Plant proteins can provide them, although many individual sources contain less leucine or lower amounts of one or more essential amino acids per gram than dairy, eggs or meat.

Digestibility also varies because plant cell structures and compounds such as fiber can reduce amino acid availability. That does not make plant protein ineffective. Research shows that sufficiently dosed, high-quality plant proteins can support strength and muscle growth comparably to animal protein, particularly when total daily protein intake is adequate. Soy is a complete option, while combining varied sources across the day helps cover amino acid needs.

If most of your protein is plant-based, aim toward the higher end of a suitable daily intake, roughly 1.6–2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight for active adults seeking muscle growth. Build meals around protein-dense foods such as tofu, tempeh, seitan, legumes or soy and pea protein, and spread them across the day.
