Strength training builds stronger bones, not just muscle
Bone isn't a static structure — it's living tissue that constantly remodels itself in response to the mechanical load placed on it. A principle known as Wolff's law describes how bone strengthens and increases density in response to regular load above its accustomed level, and weakens in the absence of load — a similar adaptive mechanism to what drives muscle growth.
Strength training with weights, especially exercises that put axial load on the spine and major joints (squats, deadlifts), creates exactly the type of mechanical stress that effectively stimulates bone to strengthen. This matters especially for preventing osteoporosis — the age-related loss of bone density that raises fracture risk, particularly in postmenopausal women, but that begins in both sexes as early as the 30s or 40s.
Unlike medication for osteoporosis, which typically just slows the loss of bone density, strength training is one of the few proven non-drug ways to actively build bone density at any age. Practical takeaway: strength training is worth thinking of not just as a tool for looks and strength, but as a long-term investment in skeletal health, especially valuable as you get older.
