Active recovery speeds up progress more than total rest
It seems intuitive that the best way to recover after a hard session is complete rest. In reality, light activity on a rest day — a walk, an easy bike ride, relaxed-pace swimming — often speeds up recovery more effectively than staying fully still.
The mechanism is about blood flow: light movement boosts circulation in the muscles without adding meaningful extra stress, which helps clear metabolic byproducts that built up from hard training faster and delivers oxygen and nutrients the tissue needs to recover. Studies comparing active vs. fully passive recovery more often find faster soreness reduction and quicker strength recovery with light activity.
The key word is light. Active recovery shouldn't create noticeable strain or fatigue — the intensity should stay at a level where you could easily hold a conversation. If you feel more tired after a 'rest day' than before it, that wasn't active recovery — it was just another workout.
