How caffeine actually improves strength performance
Caffeine doesn't only work as a nervous-system stimulant. It blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, which lowers your perceived fatigue and sharpens focus — that's the well-known part. But there's a second, less obvious effect: caffeine acts directly on muscle cells, boosting calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which strengthens muscle contraction at the cellular level.
Studies show average gains of 3–7% in strength and endurance at doses around 3–6 mg per kilogram of body weight, taken 45–60 minutes before training. The effect varies by person: people with a certain variant of the CYP1A2 gene, which controls caffeine metabolism, may see a weaker response or more anxiety instead of a boost.
One important catch is tolerance. With daily use, the performance benefit gradually fades, which is why many athletes cycle their caffeine intake, saving it for key sessions or competitions.
