Nasal breathing isn't a performance shortcut

Breathing through your nose can control pace, but it does not unlock extra endurance.

Nasal breathing warms, humidifies and filters incoming air, but it also creates more airflow resistance than breathing through the mouth. As exercise intensity rises, ventilation must increase sharply to deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Restricting yourself to nasal breathing can make that harder without improving how much oxygen your muscles can use.

Claims that nasal breathing dramatically boosts performance often point to nitric oxide produced in the nasal passages. Although nitric oxide has physiological roles, there is little evidence that this mechanism provides a meaningful endurance advantage during hard exercise. Athletes naturally shift toward combined mouth-and-nose breathing when ventilation demand increases; that response is useful, not dysfunctional.

Nasal-only breathing can still serve as a simple intensity check during easy cardio: if you cannot maintain it comfortably, you may be moving beyond an easy pace. Use it when it feels natural, but allow mouth breathing during harder work instead of treating nasal breathing as a performance requirement.
