How to do more push-ups: a progression plan
To do more push-ups, start with a variation you can do for 8โ15 clean reps, train it two to three times a week with several sets close to failure, and move to a harder variation once you can do about 3 ร 15โ20. Most beginners go from zero full push-ups to 10 or more in two to three months by progressing from incline push-ups to full ones.
What a good push-up looks like
- Hands slightly wider than shoulder width, fingers pointing forward.
- A straight line from head to heels: squeeze the glutes and brace the abs so the hips do not sag.
- Elbows about 30โ60 degrees from the body rather than flared straight out.
- Lower until the chest is a fist's width from the floor, then press back up to straight arms.
Partial reps feel easier but build less strength. It is better to do fewer full-range reps on an easier variation.
The progression ladder
- Wall push-up: hands on a wall, feet a step or two back.
- Incline push-up: hands on a table, bench or kitchen counter. The lower the surface, the harder it gets.
- Knee push-up: a useful step, though a low incline usually transfers better to full push-ups.
- Full push-up: hands and toes on the floor.
- Harder variations: feet-elevated push-ups, deficit push-ups on handles or plates, pause push-ups, weighted push-ups with a backpack or plate, and eventually archer push-ups.
Pick the variation where you can do 8โ15 good reps. When you reach 3 ร 15โ20, lower the incline or move to the next step.
A weekly plan
Two or three sessions per week on non-consecutive days:
- 3โ5 sets of your current variation
- Stop each set one or two reps before failure
- Rest 1.5โ2 minutes between sets
- Optionally finish with one set of an easier variation to failure for extra volume

Log this exerciseExample for someone who can do 4 full push-ups: 3 sets of incline push-ups on a bench for 10โ12 reps, followed by 2 sets of 3โ4 full push-ups. Each week, add a rep or two, and every two to three weeks shift more of the work to full push-ups.
Using frequent practice
Spreading easy sets throughout the day, such as a few sets at about half your maximum, can add volume without much fatigue. This "grease the groove" approach works well for push-ups, as long as the reps stay crisp and you keep two or three harder sessions each week.
Accessories that help
Bench press, dumbbell presses and dips build the chest, shoulders and triceps that drive the push-up. Planks and hollow holds help you keep a rigid body line. If you have access to a gym, these can speed progress, but push-ups alone are enough to improve.
FAQ
How many push-ups should I be able to do?
There is no single standard. Being able to do 10โ20 strict push-ups is a solid level of upper-body strength for most adults.
Can I do push-ups every day?
Light, easy sets can be done daily, but hard sets to near failure need recovery. Two to four demanding sessions a week are enough.
Do push-ups build muscle?
Yes. Taken close to failure, push-ups build the chest, shoulders and triceps much like a light bench press. Make them harder over time so the stimulus keeps rising.
