What BMI is and how it is calculated

Body mass index divides your weight by the square of your height. It is the screening tool the World Health Organization uses to sort adults into weight categories: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is a normal weight, 25–29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity.

BMI is quick and needs no equipment, which is why doctors use it so widely. But it cannot tell muscle from fat. A muscular lifter can easily land in the "overweight" range while being lean, and an older person with little muscle can have a normal BMI and still carry too much body fat.

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) / height (in)²

How to read your result

Use BMI as a first rough check, not a verdict. If you train with weights, pair it with a waist measurement or a body-fat estimate — the body fat calculator below uses just a tape measure.

The healthy-weight range for your height is wide on purpose: anywhere inside it is fine. If your BMI is outside the normal range and you are not unusually muscular, a moderate calorie change plus regular training is the most reliable way to move toward it.

FAQ
What is a healthy BMI?

For adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a normal, healthy weight. Some health organizations use slightly lower cut-offs for people of Asian descent, because health risks start rising at a lower BMI.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not very. BMI counts all weight the same, so people with a lot of muscle are often labelled overweight. For people who train, body-fat percentage or waist size says more about health.

Does BMI work for children?

Not this way. Children and teenagers are assessed with BMI-for-age percentile charts, because their body composition changes as they grow. This calculator is for adults aged 18 and over.
