Technique
The kettlebell waiter walk is a loaded carry in which one kettlebell is held overhead with a locked-out arm while you walk a set distance, like a waiter carrying a tray. Holding the weight overhead on one side challenges shoulder stability, the upper back and the obliques, which must stop the torso from leaning. Press or clean the bell overhead, stack the wrist over the elbow and shoulder, keep the ribs down and walk slowly with short, controlled steps.
Steps
- Clean or press a kettlebell overhead with one arm until the elbow is locked
- Stack the wrist directly over the elbow and shoulder, biceps near the ear
- Brace the core, keep the ribs down and stand tall
- Walk forward slowly with short steps, keeping the arm vertical and the torso upright
- After the planned distance, lower the bell under control and switch sides
Common mistakes
- Letting the arm drift forward so the shoulder is no longer stacked
- Arching the lower back or leaning away from the weight
- Walking fast with long strides and losing control of the bell
Variations
- Bottoms-up waiter walk with the kettlebell upside down
- Dumbbell waiter walk for a different grip
- Rack-to-overhead mixed carry with one bell overhead and one at the shoulder
