Technique
The resistance band shoulder press is an overhead press done standing on a band and pushing the handles up from shoulder height. Band tension is lightest at the bottom and heaviest at lockout, which suits the shoulders' strength curve and makes it a joint-friendly option for home, travel or warm-ups.
Steps
- Stand on the middle of a band with feet hip-width apart and hold the handles at shoulder height, palms forward
- Brace your core and squeeze your glutes so the lower back stays neutral
- Press the handles straight overhead until your arms are fully extended
- Lower slowly back to shoulder height under control
Common mistakes
- Leaning back and arching the lower back to finish the press
- Letting the wrists bend back under the tension
Variations
- Single-arm band shoulder press
- Seated band shoulder press
