Technique
The kneeling cable crunch is an abdominal exercise performed kneeling in front of a high pulley with a rope attachment held beside the head. Instead of bending at the hips, the movement comes from flexing the spine, curling the ribs down toward the pelvis against the cable's resistance. Because the load can be increased in small steps, it is one of the simplest ways to progressively overload the abs with sets of roughly 8 to 15 reps.
Steps
- Attach a rope to a high pulley and kneel facing the machine about an arm's length away
- Hold the rope ends beside your head or forehead
- Keep the hips stacked over the knees and brace the core
- Curl the spine down, bringing the elbows toward the thighs and the ribs toward the pelvis
- Pause briefly at the bottom, then return slowly while keeping tension on the abs
Common mistakes
- Hinging at the hips and sitting back onto the heels instead of flexing the spine
- Pulling the rope down with the arms
- Using a load so heavy that the movement becomes a jerk
Variations
- Standing cable crunch facing away from the pulley
- Oblique cable crunch rotating the elbows toward one knee
- Cable crunch with a pause and full exhale at the bottom
