Landmine Twist
Muscles
Technique
The landmine twist has you rotate a barbell anchored in a landmine attachment from side to side at arm's length, which loads the obliques through a large rotational range that most core exercises don't reach. Hold the free end of the bar with both hands, arms extended in front of you, and rotate your torso and hips together to swing the bar down to one side near the floor, then reverse through center to the other side. Keep the movement coming from your core and hips rotating together rather than just your arms swinging the weight.
Steps
- Hold the free end of the bar with both hands, arms extended in front of you
- Rotate your torso and hips together to swing the bar down toward one side
- Reverse through center and rotate to the other side, keeping the movement controlled
Common mistakes
- Swinging the bar with just the arms instead of rotating from the core and hips
- Using a weight heavy enough that the movement becomes a jerky swing instead of a controlled rotation
Variations
- Kneeling version to remove leg and hip involvement and isolate the core more
- Paused version holding briefly at each side for extra time under tension
