Technique
The Smith machine calf raise is a standing calf raise with the bar of a Smith machine across your upper back and the balls of your feet on a step. The guided bar lets you use heavy loads safely and focus on a full stretch and a hard contraction of the calves without worrying about balance.
Steps
- Place a step or plate under the Smith bar and stand on it with the balls of your feet, heels hanging off
- Set the bar across your upper back as for a squat and unlock it
- Lower your heels slowly into a deep stretch with your knees almost straight
- Push through the balls of your feet to rise as high as possible, pause, and lower again under control
Common mistakes
- Bending the knees to bounce the weight up
- Cutting the range short at the bottom or the top
Variations
- Single-leg Smith machine calf raise
- Smith machine calf raise with toes turned slightly in or out
