Technique
Sit in the calf raise machine with the pads resting on your lower thighs. Raise your heels as high as possible, contracting the soleus. Lower slowly for a full stretch at the bottom. The bent-knee position shifts emphasis from the gastrocnemius to the soleus.
Steps
- Place the balls of your feet on the platform with your heels free to move
- Secure the thigh pads just above your knees
- Release the safety stop while holding the weight with raised heels
- Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
- Pause briefly and contract your calves at the top
- Lower your heels slowly into a full comfortable stretch
Common mistakes
- Bouncing out of the bottom position
- Using a shortened range of motion
- Allowing the knees to drift inward or outward
- Positioning the thigh pads directly on the kneecaps
Variations
- Single-leg seated calf raise machine
- Plate-loaded seated calf raise
- Seated dumbbell calf raise
- Seated barbell calf raise
