Technique
Attach an ankle cuff to a low cable pulley and secure it around your outer ankle, standing side-on to the machine. Keeping your leg straight, lift it out to the side away from the machine. Squeeze your outer hip at the top of the movement. Return under control and complete all reps before switching legs.
Steps
- Secure the ankle cuff to the leg farthest from the low pulley
- Stand side-on and hold the machine for balance
- Brace your core and keep your pelvis level
- Lift the cuffed leg straight out to the side
- Squeeze your outer glute at the top
- Lower the leg slowly to the starting position
Common mistakes
- Hiking the working-side hip to lift the leg higher
- Rotating the pelvis or toes outward during the lift
- Swinging the leg with momentum
- Letting the weight stack pull the leg back quickly
Variations
- Leaning-away cable hip abduction
- Bent-knee cable hip abduction
- Cable hip abduction with slight hip extension
