Technique
The single-leg kettlebell deadlift is a hip hinge on one leg while holding a kettlebell, usually in the hand opposite the standing leg. It trains the hamstrings and glutes of each side separately and challenges balance and hip stability, which carries over well to running, jumping and everyday movement.
Steps
- Stand on one leg with a slight bend in the knee and hold a kettlebell in the opposite hand
- Push the hips back and let the free leg rise behind you while the torso tips forward
- Lower the kettlebell along the standing leg until you feel a strong stretch in the hamstring, keeping the back flat and hips square
- Drive the hips forward and squeeze the glute to return to standing
Common mistakes
- Rotating the hips open so the raised leg points out to the side
- Rounding the back to reach the kettlebell lower
Variations
- Single-leg deadlift with the kettlebell in the same-side hand
- Single-leg deadlift with two kettlebells
