Technique
Start in an athletic stance with knees bent and hips low. Push off your outside foot to shuffle sideways in quick, controlled steps without crossing your feet. Keep your chest up and stay light on your feet. Change direction on cue, driving off the opposite foot.
Steps
- Stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width and lower into an athletic stance
- Brace your core and keep your chest up
- Push off your outside foot and shuffle laterally with quick, controlled steps
- Keep your feet apart without crossing them as you move
- Plant the outside foot on cue and drive in the opposite direction
Common mistakes
- Crossing the feet during the shuffle
- Standing upright instead of keeping the hips low
- Letting the knees collapse inward when changing direction
- Braking with an uncontrolled, overly narrow foot plant
Variations
- Resistance-band lateral shuffle
- Cone-to-cone lateral shuffle
