Technique
The stability ball leg curl is performed lying on your back with your heels on a fitness ball, lifting the hips and rolling the ball toward you by bending the knees. It trains the hamstrings in both of their roles, bending the knee and extending the hip, and needs only a ball, which makes it a great home alternative to the leg curl machine.
Steps
- Lie on your back with your arms on the floor and your heels on top of a stability ball
- Squeeze your glutes and lift your hips so your body forms a straight line from shoulders to heels
- Keeping the hips high, bend your knees and roll the ball toward your glutes
- Slowly straighten the legs to roll the ball back out without letting the hips drop
Common mistakes
- Letting the hips sag as the ball rolls toward you
- Rushing the return instead of controlling the lowering phase
Variations
- Single-leg stability ball leg curl
- Sliding leg curl with towels or sliders on a smooth floor
