Technique
Set gymnastic rings a few inches off the floor and grip one in each hand, arms straight, body in a plank. Lower your chest between the rings while keeping them stable, then press back up. The rings' instability forces much greater stabilizer and core engagement than a push-up on a fixed surface.
Steps
- Set the rings a few inches above the floor and grip them with straight arms.
- Align your head, torso, hips, and heels in a rigid plank.
- Lower your chest between the rings while keeping your elbows controlled.
- Hold the rings steady beside your torso at the bottom.
- Press through the rings to return to the starting position.
Common mistakes
- Letting the rings drift apart during the descent
- Allowing the hips to sag or rotate
- Flaring the elbows excessively
- Shortening the range before the chest passes between the rings
Variations
- Incline ring push-up with the rings set higher
- Feet-elevated ring push-up
- Weighted ring push-up with a vest
- Ring push-up with a turnout at the top
