Technique
Stand in front of a sturdy box or bench holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, or without weights to start. Step up with one foot, press through that heel to fully extend the leg, and bring the other foot up to meet it. Step back down with control. Alternate legs or complete all reps on one side before switching.
Steps
- Stand close to a sturdy step with your feet hip-width apart and a dumbbell in each hand if you use weights
- Place one whole foot firmly on top of the step
- Press through the planted heel to extend your hip and knee
- Bring the trailing foot up to meet the lead foot
- Step down under control and repeat on the other side
Common mistakes
- Pushing excessively off the trailing foot
- Letting the working knee collapse inward
- Placing only the toes or forefoot on the step
- Dropping quickly back to the floor
Variations
- Alternating step-up
- Single-side step-up
- Lateral step-up
- Higher-box step-up
