Technique
Start in a wide push-up position and lower down to one side, bending that arm while the other stays straight. Without pressing back up, shift your weight laterally across to the other side like a typewriter carriage, then press up on that side. Keeps constant tension on the chest through the full lateral range.
Steps
- Set your hands wider than shoulder-width in a high plank
- Lower your chest toward one hand while keeping the opposite arm straight
- Shift your chest laterally across the floor without rising
- Bend the opposite arm as the first arm straightens
- Press through the bent-side hand to return to the top
Common mistakes
- Raising the chest while shifting between sides
- Letting the hips sag or rotate during the lateral movement
- Placing the hands too narrow to straighten the opposite arm
- Flaring the bent elbow directly out from the shoulder
Variations
- Kneeling typewriter push-up
- Incline typewriter push-up
- Feet-elevated typewriter push-up
- Typewriter push-up on handles
