Technique
Start in a downward-dog position, hips high. Dive your chest forward and down in an arc close to the floor, ending in an upward-dog position with hips low and chest up. Reverse the arc back to the start. A flowing, continuous movement rather than a straight up-down press.
Steps
- Set your hands shoulder-width apart and raise your hips into a downward-dog position
- Bend your elbows and lower your head and chest toward the floor
- Sweep your chest forward close to the floor in a smooth arc
- Extend your arms as you lower your hips and lift your chest into upward dog
- Reverse the arc to return to the hips-high starting position
Common mistakes
- Dropping the hips before beginning the forward dive
- Letting the chest travel too far above the floor
- Flaring the elbows excessively during the dive
- Turning the movement into a standard straight up-and-down push-up
Variations
- Kneeling Hindu push-up
- Hands-elevated Hindu push-up
- Feet-elevated Hindu push-up
- Close-grip Hindu push-up
